About Us
Hi, I'm Joanna!
Thank you for visiting this website that I created.
My name is Joanna, and I recently graduated from St. Andrew High School for Girls in Jamaica. This fall, I'll be continuing my education overseas. As excited as I am for this next chapter, I've been thinking a lot about the opportunities I've had and how many students aren't as fortunate.
Since 2022, I have volunteered with Project STAR, an incredible Jamaican organization that supports communities across the island. Through Project STAR, I've had the opportunity to participate in community outreach projects, educational initiatives, and disaster relief efforts. These experiences have taught me something important: education can change lives, but only when students have the resources they need to succeed.
After Hurricane Melissa devastated parts of western Jamaica, I volunteered to help prepare relief supplies for affected families. As we packed food, hygiene products, and other necessities, I kept thinking about the families and children who would be receiving those packages.
I thought about the students preparing for PEP, CSEC, and CAPE examinations. As a student myself, I know how stressful those exams can be under normal circumstances. I couldn't imagine trying to study after losing a home, belongings, and school supplies.
While many organizations have worked hard to provide food, clothing, and rebuilding assistance, I realized that students faced another challenge that wasn't always visible: replacing the textbooks they needed for school.
That's when this idea was born.
I knew that every student's textbook list would be different depending on their school and grade level. I also knew that many people genuinely want to help but often don't know where to start. Some worry that their donation may be too small to make a difference. Others simply want reassurance that their contribution is reaching a real person with a real need.
So I decided to create a simple solution: a way to connect donors directly with individual students who need help obtaining their textbooks.
This website is built on a simple belief:
Every student deserves the opportunity to learn, regardless of their circumstances.
How It Works
Project STAR has identified and vetted students from communities in western Jamaica that were impacted by Hurricane Melissa and who have demonstrated financial need.
To protect the privacy and safety of these students:
- Real names are not used.
- Schools are not identified.
- Student profiles are anonymized.
Each student has submitted their required textbook list for the upcoming school year.
I have worked with local bookstores to obtain pricing for each list, and every student profile shows the amount needed to purchase their required textbooks.
You can browse through the student profiles and choose a student to sponsor.
Donations are processed securely through Project STAR's Hurricane Melissa donation portal, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process.
Whether you are in Jamaica or overseas, you can make a donation in JMD or USD.
Once a student has been sponsored:
- You will receive confirmation of your donation.
- The student's profile will be updated.
- Project STAR will purchase and deliver the textbooks directly to the student.
- We will provide updates so you know your contribution reached the student it was intended to help.
Why This Matters
A textbook may seem like a small thing.
But for a student, it can mean:
- Being able to complete assignments.
- Preparing for examinations.
- Participating confidently in class.
- Staying on track toward future goals and dreams.
For some students, a single textbook can make the difference between falling behind and moving forward.
A Personal Request
As someone who has benefited from educational opportunities, I believe strongly in paying it forward.
This project is not just about books. It's about hope, opportunity, and investing in the future of a young person who deserves the chance to succeed.
If you are able, I hope you will consider sponsoring a student. And please share my website with your friends and family.
Together, we can help ensure that when school begins in September, more students will have the tools they need to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams.
Thank you for being here and for considering making a difference.
With gratitude,
Joanna
